Recyling Crystal Teardrops

A small case of crystals has taken up space on my shelf for a few years and this December I decided to create jewelry using them.  There were vintage teardrops, Swarovski teardrops, and chandelier prisms - all have some kind of imperfection.  In the case of the teardrops the tops are broken and I just hate to throw them away. 
3 Teardrop Crystals with Bead Caps
My solution is to make bead caps with bales from silver metal clay and glue the crystals into the caps.  Since silver metal clay shrinks in firing, I knew I needed to make the caps larger.  I molded polymer clay over the top of the teardrop and baked it.  This gave me a firm form where I could build my bead cap of the silver clay.  I started with 3 forms and made 3 different caps with bales.  This was an experiment that worked!  The forms made the caps bigger than the crystals with room to shrink.  Also I found the perfect drying place for the clay caps......the points of my jewelry pliers!

After the clay was dry and sanded, I fired them in my kiln. 
The finished caps were brushed, polished and fitted to the teardrops.  Then I used E6000 glue and carefully attached the caps to the crystals.  I love them and think I will make several more for my etsy store (www.etsy.com/shop/lindabrittdesign) for Valentine’s Day gifts.  What do you think?

Spring Do-Over Challenge

Re-do of Original Pieces Plus My Art Beads  I’m hooked!  The Do-Over Challenge that Jeannie Dukic ‘JKD Studio’ www.jkdjewelry.com offers has become something I look forward to.  Jeannie sends pieces of her ‘old’ jewelry to those of us who sign up and we get to create something new from them.  It does not matter if we like the piece she sends because we take it apart, add beads from our stash and create a completely new piece.  It’s a great way to recycle. The Draw of the Mojave Desert or Why I Started Designing Jewelry

When you look at my etsy stores you see Mojave Stone jewelry .  In the 1970's, my father and two brothers mined a stone in the Mojave Desert in the middle of nowhere California!  Actually, the mine was somewhat but not very close to Desert Center.  It had been a gold/silver mine before they staked their claim and began mining stone.  My family lived in Missouri and the stone had to be trucked from the desert after strip mining it.  I was married and away from home so I got to hear the stories of making a road, fighting off bees, surviving the heat, being careful of the critters and all the other 'Wild West' excitement.  And I did not have to rough it! Dad was going to retire (some day) and make and sell the polished cabochons (a stone cut and polished usually with a flat back and a convex top) for jewelry.  In the meantime, he had some distributors sell it, some metal smiths create pieces, and he trademarked it as 'Mojave Royal Blue' and 'Mojave Stone'.  He
