Which Story to Tell? Which Color to Wear?

Image
My last post told how a mixed media wall piece combined wood, metal clay, feathers and ribbons to produce a story.   I introduced the 'Gastornis' - an extinct flightless primitive bird.  This week I'm sharing the 2 pendants I made at the same time I made the 'Gastornis' wall decor.   This post is about telling a story with jewelry and shows how color can add to the message. The pendant on the left above combines warm brass beads, meaningful red prayer beads and a handmade bronze wire clasp.  Does it made you feel excited?  The pendant on the right combines Hubei turquoise with silver and bronze.  The greenish color along with the silver cools the bronze.  Maybe this pendant makes you feel calmer?   Each of us bring our own color experiences with us.  I find it helpful to understand what we like and why.  That makes selections more meaningful and enjoyable.   Let's look at the pendant on the left and...

Completed Sea Story

Last week I shared my unfinished Sea Story with you.  This week shows the finished piece.  You will see some of the photo tips I learned from the photography class used on the pictures here!  (light in front so the details show, etc) When silver is fired in the kiln, it looks white because the molecules are standing up.  When it is brushed the molecules lay down and it looks silver.  I brushed the  'Sea Story' with a wire brush along with 3M wheels to make everything silver.  Then I waited for my Jool Tool to arrive! When it arrived I ripped open the package, put it together and then watched the DVD!  This tool is going to be so much fun! Things I realized about the Jool Tool after it arrived:   http://www.jooltool.com/ .A vacuum system is needed!  Of course I set it on the counter to try it out without any vacuum system.  Couldn't wait! and did not realize how having one would be necessary for good health and housekeeping...

A Few of the Stories: The tall glass pitcher was given to my mother by an American Indian man who took care of my brother and I while Mom finished college at age 44.    I learned the meaning of sharing and giving of oneself.   The pitcher was his mother’s, his treasured possession and he wanted us to have it to remember him.   After Mom and Dad died, I integrated many of their possessions into my home.   My mother’s paintings hang on my walls. I remember watching her and listening to her as she created them.   Dad’s collection of red glass admonishes m...
